Conn Syndrome (Primary aldosteronism or primary hyperaldosteronism)

 

• aldosterone hypersecreation by adrenal glands
• most commonly affecting those in the 30-50 yr age group
• greater prevalence in women

Aldosterone:

Etiology

1. cortical adenoma
2. idiopathic cortical hyperplasia
3. renal tumor – increase renin secetion

Manifestation

• HTN due to Na2+ and H2O retention
• hypokalemia (potassium is excreted by the kidneys as more Na2+ is retained)
• alkalosis (high [aldosterone] causes H+ ion secretion)

Calcitonin

a 32-amino acid linear polypeptide hormone that is produced by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland.

Regulates Calcium levels in the body. Acts to lower the level of calcium in the blood plasma and inhibit resorption of bone

available as a medication, in an injectable form and as a nasal spray; used to treat osteoporosis
